Tips of how to beat Ayano in NEO: TWEWY
As it happens, Ayano is one of the toughest fights in the game, especially if you are not prepared. She becomes the boss Iris Cantus and has one particularly devastating attack towards the end of the battle.
Since this is just around the corner, it’s a good time for a few tips that will help you out.
Equip Fire pins (but retain a healing pin)
Ayano (a.k.a. Iris Cantus) is weak to fire, so before the battle you should equip as many of these as possible. Based on the button combinations and Uber pin limitations, you might not be able to give one to everyone but since this is her weakness it is a no-brainer to gear up with the fire element as much as possible.
However, given how tricky this battle can become it will be crucial to keen a pin in your arsenal that has the HP Vampire skill to ensure you have the means to recover when you’re hit. There’s also the problem that Ayano can poison you, so it’s all the more necessary to continuously recoup your health.
Keep your distance at the right time
Iris Cantus can conjure a dangerous green force field that surrounds her body and rips through your HP if you are nearby. She can also swing a powerful melee attack that deals a significant amount of damage.
The key here is to only use your rapid tap close-range attacks when it’s safe. Once the barrier disappears, hit her hard and fast with these pins before retreating and switching to ranged attacks. If you time it right, you’ll be able to deal continuous damage – don’t waste your ranged pins before the force field reappears.
Even whilst attacking from afar, Ayano has some dangerous attacks. She can summon a stream of poison rain that follows you around the screen, and periodically fires three sharp arrows your way. Stay far enough away that you can see the arrows coming, and keep dodging away from the rain whilst hitting her with your ranged pins.
Beware of her Punishment
When her health gets low, she’ll stop you in your tracks and pin one of your characters to a structure of green spears. There is no way to avoid her doing this, even if you blast her with a 300% Killer Remix and hit her all the way down to zero health, she will still instigate a punishment. You must survive it and hit her with one last attack.
Iris Cantus will walk towards the spears, giving you a brief window to free the trapped party member. You won’t have much time, and you’ll initially only have two pins available. Iris Cantus is invincible for this, so immediately target the spears and go to town. If you fail, then she’ll strike with an attack that will probably take off about half your total health. If you succeed, then she’ll move onto another character.
Destroy three structures to get back into the main battle, or alternatively get hit which will resume the battle. However, if you get hit then she will shortly punish another character so you should try and finish her as soon as possible.
As long as you have enough fire-element pins equipped, you should be able to release your teammates in time.
Use a Killer Remix at the right time
At this point, you can amass 300% Groove for an almighty Killer Remix from the whole party, which also recoups most of your HP.
There’s no particularly bad time to use it as you cannot actually finish her off with this (see above section) but the best time to use this is probably when Iris Cantus is at around a third of her health. The perilous Punishment attack comes at roughly 15%-20% of HP, so using your Killer Remix beforehand will ensure you have enough health to survive if you fail to release your teammate.
Mash the buttons to blast her down to zero HP, which won’t finish her and will trigger the Punishment. If you aren’t able to destroy the spear structure in time, then you may take a hefty hit but will simply need to land one more attack of your own to win the battle.
Obviously if you get in serious trouble and need to recover your HP before this point, then you should use your Killer Remix sooner.
